FINALS DAY REPORT – SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 8th
Well, what an incredible day! From the get up and go just after 9:30 when all the umpire’s chairs were in place and multiple benches & chairs were set facing the action, we were blessed with perfect weather for tennis. Sunny, warm but not too hot and with no wind, the ladies started us off with both singles finals. Very tight three set matches saw Jaina edge past current champion Claire in the Tournament and Naomi win through against Alpa in the Plate. At the same time Dara beat Yayin in the Under 10s final; more talent for the future!
The men took over centre stage for their singles battles and Andy Coles got past Jonathan in two tight sets and the remarkable, ambidextrous Johny triumphed over Olly in the Plate.
The battle of the youngest Stamps saw Jasmine win against Sienna before it was time for the more mature girls to double up and hit the courts. Racheal & Miriam triumphed in another tight three setter against Claire & Naomi in the Tournament final and Alpa & Jaina put their stamp on the Plate by beating Fiona & Brigitte.
Another Chorleywood family battle saw Charles overcome brother James in the Boys under 16, umpired by DoT Steve Shea witnessing more future talent firsthand. Playing yesterday saw Nina Steel triumph over Thomas Faura in the under 8s; we look forward to seeing more of them all!
There was nothing mixed about the mixed final; Jaina & Jonathan battled back from a set down to topple Racheal & Paolo, adding to their Stamp collection to take the Tournament title in three with some high quality tennis.
The men’s Plate saw youth triumph over experience with Olly & David Hall winning in two against Andy Causton & David Baddeley although his mind may have been elsewhere with a kitchen full of food; thank you Elaine & Chrissie.
Finally, it was time for the Chairman to be helped out of his wheelchair and battle against the youngsters with Jonathan. Unfortunately, we came up short in a tight two sets against Andy Coles & Paolo. Jonathan later confirmed that Andy & Paolo had failed a drugs test, so Jonathan & I did win after all! However, Jonathan was extremely tired after an incredible effort in three finals and may just have got that wrong.
A thank you to Lynda for organising all the trophies; Martin for running the bar; everyone that brought cakes & nibbles and all those who came along and supported the finalists. It was a truly great, friendly family fun day with a tremendous atmosphere throughout. We are truly blessed in simply having ‘nice’ people as members; long may that continue! Finally, our grateful thanks to those who gave up (in most cases!) the bar and helped out with the important task of umpiring. Always a challenge when you see nuts, bolts & washers falling off; hopefully they were indeed from the umpires’ chairs and not the umpires.
Here’s to next years’ Summer Tournament! I cannot see what thrills & spills it’ll provide but then I haven’t got 2020 vision.
Happy hitting, Chris – Chairman
